Allegra (fexofenadine) dosage for children
Also sold as Children’s Allegra Allergy, generic fexofenadine
Children’s Allegra liquid is 30 mg per 5 mL. Children 2 to 11 years take 5 mL every 12 hours, and 12 and older take 10 mL every 12 hours. Don’t give more than 2 doses in 24 hours, and don’t give it with fruit juice. For children under 2, the package says to ask a doctor.

- Under 2 years: the package says to ask a doctor. Don’t give it unless your child’s doctor tells you to, and ask them for the dose.

Two things that stop Allegra working
- Fruit juice. The label says not to take it with fruit juices. Give it with water.
- Antacids. Don’t give it at the same time as an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium.
Ask a doctor before using it if your child has kidney disease.
Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec?
Allegra is taken twice a day; Claritin and Zyrtec are once a day. All three cause less drowsiness than Benadryl. Don’t combine antihistamines unless your child’s doctor advises it.
When to call the doctor
- Your child is under 2 and has allergy symptoms or hives.
- Hives last more than a few days or keep coming back.
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction: trouble breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Call 911.
- You gave too much or aren’t sure. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
